The Compare Folders or Paths Dialog

Compare Folders or Paths

Entering the Folders / Paths to be Compared

Selecting the Folders / Paths to Compare

Enter the paths for the two folders (or in the case of comparing paths, the root folders) to be compared.

You can use the Select Folders Button will open a dialog allowing you to easily browse your file system (and network if available ) and select the two folders.

Advanced: You can also specify folders that should not be included. Simply separate each folder with the bar character (|) and precede them with a minus sign. For instance entering C:\My Documents | -work pics | -temp docs would exclude all folders named work pics and temp docs from being compared. (You could even enter something like C:\My Documents | -temp* to exclude any folder with a name beginning with temp.)

If there is a specific folder you want to exclude you should include the full or partial paths, e.g. | -C:\My Documents\temp | -D:\My Documents\temp or | My Documents\temp

Note that it makes no difference in which field (Folder 1: or Folder 2:) you enter the folders to be excluded.

Entering Patterns to be Included or Excluded

Including and/or Excluding File Types

(Note: If the Patterns field is left empty all files will be included, i.e. *.* is assumed)

The Patterns field allows you to refine which files to include and/or exclude in the comparison. This can be really helpful. For instance if you want to compare the DLLs used by Windows on two different systems you could just enter the paths to the two Windows folders on the two systems but that could return thousands of files. By entering *.DLL in the Patterns field only those files will be collected and compared. (You could even refine it further by entering something like S*.DLL).

Click the Patterns button to open a dialog which will allow you enter the include / exclude patterns in a simple, line-by-line format.

Compare Two Folders or Two Paths

Coimpare Folders or Paths

Select Root Folders Only to compare only the files in the specified folders.

Select All Sub-Folders all the files in and below the specified folders.

How Modified Times are Compared

Time Resolution

File Time Resolution

These two fields set how closely the modified times of files being compared must be for them to be considered the same. The default is '1' Second.

The minimum Resolution value is 0.

A value of 0 tells FileBoss to compare file times exactly as they are.

The maximum values for Resolution are:

Days

730

Hours

17,520

Minutes

1,051,200

Seconds

63,072,000

The default is 1 second.

Normally you should NOT change the default settings unless you have a very specific reason and really know what you are doing.

Note that while Windows records File Times to the nearest 100 nanoseconds (1/10,000,000 of a second) the recorded times are not that accurate and are rounded by most systems anyway.

Time Zone Offset

The value entered in this field will be added to the Modified File Times in the 2nd folder or path being compared before any comparisons are made.

For example, if most of the files in the second folder or path are two hours earlier than the times in the first group you could enter 2 here. Those files will then be considered the as having the same time.

If the times were two hours later, then enter -2 to achieve the same result.

Saving & Using Templates

Saving & Using Templates

Templates allow you to save the current settings in the dialog as a named group that can be selected and reused later. (FileBoss stores and remembers the Templates even when the program is closed.)

To save the current settings as a named template click the Template button.

To use a template simply select it from the drop down list (click the down arrow to the left of the field).
