Frequently Asked Questions
Installation
Will Installing FileBoss replace Windows Explorer and hijack its
settings?
Never! FileBoss will not do anything you don't tell it to
and you can't even tell it to do that. FileBoss is there to
help you not screw things up. You can tell Windows to use
FileBoss as your default viewer for folders and drives, the
choice is yours.
Can I keep my Explorer add-ins on its right-click menu?
Of course. Explorer's right-click menu is still available
from within FileBoss. You can access it two ways.
Right-click any file or folder and from FileBoss' popup menu
select Plug-ins >> or hold down the Ctrl
key while you right click the item to bring up Explorer's
menu (technically the Windows Shell Menu) directly. Either way you will have the exact same popup
menu as you would have in explorer with all your favorite
add-ins.
Will FileBoss reassign any file extensions?
No. FileBoss registers only its own extensions .fbopts, .fbwins
and .fbfileset.
No other extensions touched.
What will FileBoss install in my Windows folder?
Does it install any DLLs anywhere?
Nothing. FileBoss is a very well behaved program that
doesn't go where it is not wanted and not needed. There are only two folders
that the install program will affect. The first is where
FileBoss itself will be installed (typically Program
Files\FileBoss) and its data folder for options,
settings and saved file sets (typically My
Documents\FileBoss Data). And the location of both
folders can be changed in the install routine.
What does FileBoss do to my registry settings?
FileBoss stores all of its registry settings (which isn't many) under the key The
Utility Factory.
What version of Windows will FileBoss run on?
FileBoss will runs incredibly well on Windows 98 SE and
above. That includes:
Windows Vista, Windows 2000, Windows
XP (home and pro), Windows 2003 - and above.
Uninstalling
Can I uninstall FileBoss easily?
Of course. A link to the uninstall routine is created in the
Start > Programs > FileBoss menu.
Using FileBoss
Every time FileBoss starts it opens up all the previous
Folders and File Sets. Can I stop that?
Absolutely! Go to the select Options | Program Options... from
the main menu. This will bring up the Options dialog. Select
Startup Options on the left side of the dialog. In
that panel you can set all kinds of options about how
FileBoss will start including what types, if any, of windows
will be reopened.
I really love the Drop Zones. Can they be used with other
programs?
Sure. You can drop files and folders on any of the Drop
Zones (including the special Delete and Recycle Drop Zones)
from Windows Explorer, most other programs that support
dragging and dropping files and even from most File Open and
File Save Type dialogs! (By the way, we here a The Utility
Factory love Drop Zones too!)
